Does sms on mac work when phone is dead?

My Iphone is currently not charging (going to the apple store to get this fixed today) which is why i was very happy, and pleasantly surprised to hear that my macbook running El Capitan had the awesome ability of sending and receiving text messages from my iphone, my one question is will this feature still work if my iphone is dead?
